Milan Cathedral

Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) is the cathedral church of Milan, dedicated to the Nativity of St. Mary and the seat of the Archbishop. Construction began in 1386 and its final details were completed in 1965. The building is faced in Candoglia marble, capped by a forest of pinnacles and spires including the Madonnina, and contains a large nave with four side aisles, transept, choir and a roof terrace open to visitors.

The shape it held in its prime.

A vast west façade of pale Candoglia marble, articulated into vertical buttresses, rows of blind arcades and statuary, with three broad entrance portals beneath tall pointed windows; a skyline of openwork pinnacles and spires rises from the roofline and culminates in the gilded Madonnina spire. The façade faces a broad paved square; the roof is crowded with carved pinnacles, flying buttresses and terraces, and interior spaces open into deep vaulted naves and aisles.
