Porta Sempione
Porta Sempione is a neoclassical triumphal gate in Milan, dominated by the Arco della Pace, a three-arched marble monument at the centre of Piazza Sempione. The arch is flanked by two small rectangular customs pavilions and fronts onto the wide axial avenue leading out of the city toward the Simplon Pass. It is richly decorated with bas-reliefs, allegorical statues and a large bronze quadriga crowning the attic.

What Porta Sempione looked like in its prime.
A pale stone neoclassical triumphal arch with a tall central barrel vault flanked by two smaller arches, framed by paired Corinthian columns and an inscribed attic. The surfaces combine white marble bas-reliefs and darker bronze statuary; a bronze quadriga and attendant figures crown the flat roofline. Two low rectangular customs pavilions with pediments sit to each side. The arch stands in the middle of a broad paved oval with parkland and mature trees behind it.
