The Circus of Nero was an ancient Roman circus sited on the Ager Vaticanus, built under Caligula and completed under Claudius and Nero. It was an elongated U-shaped racetrack with a central spine and obelisk, used for chariot racing and public displays, and later partly incorporated under the early basilica that stood on the same spot.

An elongated U-shaped arena about 540 m long and 100 m wide, bounded by brick-faced masonry and low outer walls with tiered seating (cavea) rising along the two long sides. One straight end contains the multi-bay carceres (starting gates); the opposite end is a curved porticoed façade. A long central spina runs down the track, topped at its centre by a single Egyptian obelisk and marked by two metae (turning-posts). Materials: Roman brick, travertine facing and packed-earth or sand arena surface.
