The Catacomb(s) of Callixtus is an extensive early Christian underground cemetery on the Appian Way in Rome, containing multiple levels of galleries, cubicula and important papal tombs. Its best-known spaces include the Crypt of the Popes and the cubicula with early Christian frescoes and inscriptions.

A maze of narrow, low barrel‑vaulted galleries hewn in pale brown volcanic tufa and travertine, with rows of rectangular burial niches (loculi) stacked along the walls and occasional marble sarcophagi set in small cubicula. Ceilings are rounded and roughly tool‑worked; some passages show later brick arch repairs. Fresco panels — small, framed images of the Good Shepherd, fish-and‑loaves scenes and saints — punctuate a dim, close interior. Light at prime appears from oil lamps in iron holders and from shallow stairwells opening to the surface.
