San Petronio Basilica

Basilica di San Petronio

The Basilica of San Petronio is the large civic church on Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, begun in 1390 and completed in its main coverings and apse by the mid-17th century. The building is an unusually vast late-Gothic, largely brick basilica with a lower marble-faced zone on the façade and a long series of lateral chapels. Its interior contains a long central nave, numerous family chapels, a historic wooden choir and two large historic organ cases.

What San Petronio Basilica looked like in its prime.

A vast, low-slung Gothic basilica of warm red-brown brick and terracotta roof tiles, 132 m long; the upper façade remains exposed brick while the lower zone is clad in pale Istrian marble panels with three sculpted portals. Along the flanks a repeated rhythm of gabled lateral chapels and buttresses steps the roofline; a row of large round oculi punctuates the clerestory. Interior light filters into a high, masonry-vaulted central nave above a long stone pavement with numerous polychrome family chapels.
