Basilica of Saint Paul outside the Walls

The Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is one of Rome's four major papal basilicas, founded at the traditional burial site of Saint Paul and enlarged in late antiquity. The building visible today dates mostly from the 19th-century reconstruction after an 1823 fire but preserves the basilica's long basilican plan with nave, four aisles and a prominent transept.

The shape it held in its prime.

A monumental longitudinal basilica set behind a colonnaded forecourt and atrium, its exterior approached along a paved court and fountain. Long rows of marble columns form a central nave flanked by four aisles, supporting a high clerestory and a timber roof. The east end terminates in a deep apse set beneath a broad triumphal arch covered in gold-ground mosaic tesserae; the interior walls carry a continuous band of papal portraits above the arcade.
