Spanish Steps

Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti

The Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are a monumental, terraced stairway of travertine that links Rome's lower Piazza di Spagna with the Piazza Trinità dei Monti and the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. Designed in the early 18th century, the stairway forms a broad, butterfly-shaped sequence of flights, terraces and balustrades overlooking the Fontana della Barcaccia and flanked by historic palazzi.

What Spanish Steps looked like in its prime.

A broad, pale travertine stairway of about 135 steps rises in a symmetrical, butterfly-shaped arrangement of three main flights and intermediate terraces, low stone balustrades, and sculpted urns. An obelisk stands on the upper landing before the white, twin-bell-towered façade of the Trinità dei Monti church. The stair fills the slope between ochre and pale stucco palazzi; a shallow Baroque fountain sits in the cobbled piazza at the base. Surfaces show finely worked stone, worn step edges, and classical mouldings.
