Trevi Fountain

Fontana di Trevi

The Trevi Fountain is an 18th-century monumental fountain built into the rear façade of the Palazzo Poli in the Trevi district of Rome. Completed in 1762, the composition centres on a triumphal-arch niche with a large statue of Oceanus and an elaborate travertine rockscape that pours into a single large basin. It marks the terminal point of the Acqua Vergine aqueduct and serves as a major urban water display and gathering place.

What Trevi Fountain looked like in its prime.

A broad white‑beige travertine façade set into Palazzo Poli, dominated by a central triumphal-arch niche with free-standing columns and a muscular Oceanus on a shell chariot. A craggy travertine scogliera spreads across the lower half, populated by Tritons, hippocamps and carved vegetation; water cascades from multiple points into a large shallow semicircular pool of clear aquamarine water. The upper attic shows Corinthian pilasters, allegorical figures and a large dedicatory inscription and coat of arms.
