Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio is a medieval stone bridge over the Arno in Florence, characterised by a continuous line of shops built along both sides of its central roadway and an enclosed elevated passage (the Vasari Corridor) running above one side. The present three-arch stone bridge dates from the mid-14th century and for centuries has been lined with small commercial premises; it remains a pedestrian link between the historic centre and the Oltrarno.

What Ponte Vecchio looked like in its prime.

Long, low stone bridge of three shallow segmental arches spanning the Arno; broad stone piers rise from the water and support a narrow, paved central roadway flanked on both sides by compact two- and three-storey shop-buildings with ochre and pale pastel stucco, tiled roofs, wooden shutters and projecting shop-windows on corbels. Above the upstream row runs a continuous enclosed stuccoed gallery with small, regular high windows (the Vasari Corridor). The bridge surface is lastric stone.
