Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is the principal civic square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The paved W‑shaped plaza is edged by medieval and Renaissance palaces, the open-arched Loggia dei Lanzi, the Fountain of Neptune and a sequence of freestanding sculptures. It functions as a pedestrian forecourt and a gateway to nearby museums such as the Uffizi and the civic palace.

A broad W-shaped piazza paved in large rectangular grey sandstone slabs, framed by ochre and pale plastered palazzi with red terracotta roofs. The Palazzo Vecchio’s rusticated stone facade and high crenellated tower dominate one side; the Loggia dei Lanzi shows three wide semicircular arches on clustered columns. White marble and bronze statues punctuate the open space (including a central fountain), while arcaded ground floors contain shops and cafés beneath tall shuttered windows.
