What Baranów Sandomierski Castle looked like in its prime.
A long rectangular two-storey Mannerist block of pale plastered masonry, punctuated at the corners by cylindrical towers capped with green copper conical roofs and finials. The roofline is defined by an ornate stone attic/parapet with a regular rhythm of small gabled pinnacles. Regular tall windows are arranged on both floors above a rusticated base, with an arcade courtyard set within the central plan. The castle stands amid flat parkland and specimen trees.
Its story
The story of Baranów Sandomierski Castle.
Baranów Sandomierski Castle, the "little Wawel", was built around 1591–1606 and ranks among the most important Mannerist structures in Poland, with corner towers, a decorative parapet and an enclosed arcaded courtyard. By the end of the 17th century it had come by marriage to the Lubomirski family: Prince Józef Karol Lubomirski wed its owner, Princess Teofila Ludwika Zasławska, in 1683.
Lubomirski commissioned Tylman van Gameren, the royal Dutch-Polish architect of Jan III Sobieski's court, who converted the castle, added the western wing gallery and embellished the interiors with profuse late-baroque stucco. The castle passed successively through the Wiśniowiecki, Sanguszko, Lubomirski, Małachowski, Potocki and Krasicki families; a fire of 1848 under the Krasickis destroyed the works of art along with the entire library.
Feliks Dolański acquired the castle in 1867, and it remained with the Dolański family until the outbreak of the Second World War, surviving a second great fire in 1898. Today the restored castle serves as a historical museum, hotel and conference centre.
