Tenczyn Castle
Tenczyn (Tęczyn) Castle is a medieval manor-fortress on Castle Hill above the village of Rudno in the Polish Jura, built and expanded by the Tęczyński family from the 14th century onwards. It was heavily damaged in 1655–56 and after a later fire in the 18th century fell into long-term ruin; today extensive masonry remains stand atop a wooded hill.

Perched on the crown of a wooded, rocky hill, the castle in its prime presented an irregular polygon of pale stone curtain walls punctuated by several towers: a tall, square Tower Gate (Nawojowa) with a steep red-hipped roof at the center, multiple round Gothic towers absorbed into the walls, and a distinct red-brick arcaded wing at the east. Low bastion walls and a barbican protected the west entrance; terraces and gardens stepped down the slope below the fortress.

Tenczyn Castle stands on Castle Hill above the village of Rudno in the Polish Jura — at 411 metres the highest hill of the Garb Tenczyński, the remnant of a Permian lava stream. First mentioned on 24 September 1308, when King Władysław I the Elbow-high issued a diploma while hunting in the woods around "Thanczin", it was built as the seat of the powerful Tęczyński family, who rose to hold 45 estates, 15 of them near the castle.
The last of the line, Jan Magnus Tęczyński, died in the castle in 1637. During the Deluge of the mid-17th century it was pillaged and burned by Swedish–Brandenburgian forces hunting for the Polish Crown Jewels and the rumoured Tęczyński treasures. Rebuilt, it fell into disrepair again after a major fire in the mid-18th century and has remained a ruin ever since.
At the beginning of the 18th century the Tenczyn estates passed to Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski, then to Prince August Aleksander Czartoryski, who had married Sieniawski's only daughter Maria Zofia, and on to the Prince's daughter Izabela Lubomirska. In 1816 the castle became the property of the Potocki family, in whose hands it remained until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.
