Wawel Cathedral

Bazylika Archikatedralna św. Stanisława i św. Wacława w Krakowie

The Archcathedral Basilica of Saint Stanislaus and Saint Wenceslaus (Wawel Cathedral) is Kraków’s medieval cathedral on Wawel Hill, long used for royal coronations and as the principal burial place of Polish monarchs and national figures. The present brick-and-limestone Gothic basilica was begun in the 14th century and was successively expanded with Renaissance and Baroque chapels and mausoleums, most visibly the gilded Sigismund's Chapel. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Kraków and an active place of worship and national commemoration.

What Wawel Cathedral looked like in its prime.

Complex skyline of three distinct towers and a ring of attached chapels: a tall western tower, a squat square Romanesque brick tower with pale stone quoins, and a separate bell tower; the long three‑aisled basilica is of red brick with pale limestone dressings, steep dark roofs, and an eastern cluster of small domed chapels. A small Renaissance chapel capped by a gilded hemispherical dome projects from the southern transept, while carved stone portals, cornices and a low enclosing wall define a raised forecourt.
