The Castle of the Masovian Dukes in Płock is a Gothic brick castle expanded to its present form under Casimir III the Great and served as the residence of the Dukes of Masovia until the fifteenth century. It stands on a steep Vistulan hillside above the city and after later rebuilding and restoration now houses a museum. The complex is defined by high red‑brick curtain walls, multiple towers and an inner courtyard.

A compact, square red‑brick castle set on a steep Vistulan hillside, raised on a rough stone foundation; long, high curtain walls close a rectangular courtyard. A tall rectangular clock tower with a visible square clock face and stepped brick gables punctuates the northern side. The south‑west Szlachecka Tower shows a squared lower stage rising into an octagonal upper stage. Attached wings have steep red‑tiled roofs; towers and walls are intact and continuous at the prime date.

A wooden fortress defended by walls and dikes stood on the steep Vistulan hillside at Płock from most likely the eleventh century, a small stone stronghold at its centre. The raising of the brick castle began at the end of the thirteenth century, and it took its present Gothic form under Casimir III the Great — reconstructed in brick, raised with two towers and fortified by a double circuit of defensive walls securing both stronghold and city.
The castle served as the residence of the Dukes of Masovia until the fifteenth century. By 1538 the dukes were living in a newly built palace outside the castle walls, and the complex was given over to the Benedictines. Rebuilt and restored since, the red-brick castle above the city now houses a museum.
