Chęciny Castle
Chęciny Royal Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress in Chęciny, Poland, begun in the late 13th century and enlarged under Casimir III the Great. It served as a royal residence and later as a state prison before suffering repeated destruction in 17th–18th century wars and abandonment. The site remains a pronounced ruin standing on a grassy promontory above the town.

Perched on a steep grassy hill, the castle forms a low, elongated silhouette of grey stone curtain walls pierced by window and gate openings. Three prominent towers punctuate the wallline: two cylindrical round towers (one with a visibly darker, brick-hued upper section) and a taller rectangular tower at the east end. The curtain walls link the towers in an unbroken ridge along the crest; at its prime the walls and towers would have stood whole with a continuous roofline and battlements.

Chęciny Royal Castle was built in the late 13th century on its hilltop above the town of Chęciny. After the death of Władysław the Elbow-high the stronghold was enlarged by Casimir III the Great, and it became a residence of the king's second wife, Adelaide of Hesse.
A run of royal women followed her there: Elisabeth of Poland, Queen of Hungary; Sophia of Halshany with her son Władysław III of Varna; and Bona Sforza. The castle later served as a state prison before suffering repeated destruction in the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Abandoned, it fell into ruin in the 18th century and remains in that state today — a pronounced ruin standing on its grassy promontory above the town.
