Gniew Castle
Gniew Castle is a restored Gothic ordensburg of the Teutonic Order on the Vistula River in Gniew, northern Poland. Built after 1290 and repeatedly expanded, it later served as a Polish starosty seat and was the residence of John III Sobieski, who added an adjacent Baroque palace. The medieval fortress was destroyed by fire in 1921 and reconstructed between 1968 and 1974.

A Gothic Teutonic ordensburg sited directly beside the Vistula River, presenting a compact fortified complex whose medieval mass rises above the riverbank. In its prime the castle appears complete and occupied, with continuous defensive masonry forming a clear outline against the sky and vertical tower forms punctuating the roofline. The later Baroque palace added by John III Sobieski stands immediately adjacent, with a lower, ordered façade and classical roofline abutting the older medieval masonry.

Gniew Castle was built as a defensive structure of the Teutonic Order on the Vistula, dating to the late 13th or 14th century. By the Second Peace of Toruń in 1466 Gniew became Polish once again, and the castle was given by the Polish king to the nobleman Jan de Jani of the Clan of Ostoja, voivode of Pomerania.
Within the Kingdom of Poland the castle served as the seat of the starosts of Gniew — most famously the future King John III Sobieski, who built the adjacent Baroque palace for his wife, Marie Casimire Louise de La Grange d'Arquien. The medieval fortress was destroyed by fire in 1921 and reconstructed between 1968 and 1974.
