Brzeg Castle
Brzeg Castle is a historic castle in Brzeg, Poland, with origins recorded from 1250. The surviving complex visible today comprises a brick Gothic chapel, a richly carved stone Renaissance gatehouse, and a long white-plastered residential wing facing a broad paved square. The site is preserved and restored.

A low, connected complex of buildings facing a wide paved market square: at the left a brick Gothic chapel with a multi-sided apse, tall narrow pointed-arch windows and steep red tile roof; in the centre a three-storey carved sandstone Renaissance gatehouse with an arched entrance, a stone balcony with statues and relief frieze; to the right a long white-plastered three-storey residential range with evenly spaced rectangular windows, red tile roof and climbing greenery. The whole ensemble sits flush to the square with no high defensive towers visible.

Brzeg Castle's origins are recorded from 1250, and from 1311 until 1675 it was home to the branch of the Piast dynasty that ruled the Duchy of Brzeg. In 1342 the castle was made the capital seat of the duchy, after which it was refurbished many times; in 1370 Prince Ludwik I extended it and built the chapel that holds the Piast dynasty mausoleum.
The complex that survives today comprises a brick Gothic chapel, a richly carved stone Renaissance gatehouse and a long residential wing facing a broad paved square. Now a museum, it preserves the well-preserved sarcophagi of the dukes of Legnica and Brzeg.
