Long rectangular masonry west wing set on a grassy river slope, with a continuous steep orange-red tile roof and a white-plastered upper band above exposed red brick lower walls. A polygonal (octagonal) corner tower rises from a battered stone base at the south end; a small white pavilion with a green copper roof marks the opposite corner. In its prime the block enclosed a closed rectangular courtyard ringed by two-storey arcaded cloisters.

Sandomierz Royal Castle stands on a slope above the Vistula, on the site of a stronghold that existed in the 10th century. Between 1146 and 1166 the seat here belonged to Prince Henry of Sandomierz, son of Bolesław III Wrymouth. The Gothic castle itself was built by Casimir III the Great in the 14th century, and under Casimir IV Jagiellon in the 15th century the surviving tower rose as an integral part of the so-called Great House, the seat of the prince.

Extended in the 16th century, the royal castle was blown up in 1656, leaving only the west wing standing. That wing was afterwards transformed into a Renaissance-styled residence and is today preserved as a regional museum.
