Castle of Castelo Rodrigo

The Castle of Castelo Rodrigo is a medieval fortification that encircles the village of Castelo Rodrigo in the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Guarda district, Portugal. The oval stone enceinte carried multiple circular turrets, a square keep (Menagem Tower), and several named gateways; the defensive circuit was substantially rebuilt under King Denis in the early 14th century.

The shape it held in its prime.

The castle forms an oval stone enceinte encircling a compact village, built of warm brown-pink granite and rubble masonry with ashlar quoins. Curtain walls ring the site with regularly spaced circular turrets (thirteen at prime) and a prominent rectangular keep (Menagem Tower). Gateways punctuate the walls, including a pointed arched town gate. Roofs within the walls are red clay tile; battlement walkways run along the wall tops; a barbican and surrounding moats complete the defensive silhouette at its peak.
