The Castle of Mértola is a medieval hilltop fortress in Mértola, Portugal, dominated by a tall rectangular keep and encircling battlemented walls that overlook the Guadiana River and the town's whitewashed houses. Perched on a rocky hill above the Guadiana and the town's whitewashed houses, the irregular rectangular fortress is built of warm ochre-brown masonry with a continuous circuit of crenellated curtain walls. The silhouette is dominated by a 30 m rectangular keep tower with prismatic merlons and machicolations, flanked by square and rectangular corner towers including a semi-cylindrical tower by the main gate. A barbican and northwestern "traitors' gate" punctuate the walls; a vaulted covered cistern sits in the inner courtyard.

Mértola's hilltop above the Guadiana was fortified long before Portugal existed: an ancient river community of commercial importance, it was walled in the last third of the twelfth century under the Almohad dynasty, when the circuit was built to encircle the settlement. Nearby stands the former Islamic mosque, transformed into the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
Between about 1240–45 and 1316 Mértola was the seat of the Military Order of Santiago. The irregular rectangular fortress carries a 30-metre keep — its first-floor weapons hall roofed with a cross-vault — a "traitors gate" in the north-west wall protected by a barbican, and towers flanking the main gate to the east. At the end of the fifteenth century the alcalde's residence was built against the keep, demolishing much of the north-western battlements; today the well-preserved castle functions as a museum complex.
