What Castle of Montemor-o-Velho looked like in its prime.
Long, low-profile castle sitting on a rounded hill above a broad plain, defined by an extended run of grey, roughly cut stone curtain walls and numerous rectangular and square towers with crenellated tops. The walls step down the slope in successive fortified terraces and enclose a compact inner ward dominated by a small stone church with a simple pitched roof and bell turret. Rooflines are low; the masonry is pale-grey local stone and the overall silhouette is linear along the hilltop.
Its story
The story of Castle of Montemor-o-Velho.
The Castle of Montemor-o-Velho, in the district of Coimbra, is older than Portugal itself — the fortress predates the country's founding in 1139. A long, crenellated ring of curtain walls and towers crowns the hilltop, enclosing a small church and an open bailey, and the castle remains a prominent landmark above the surrounding plain.
It has been listed as a national monument since 1910. The old enclosure has found a modern use: since 2014 the castle has hosted Festival Forte, an electronic music festival staged within the walls each August.
