Massive dark volcanic and mortar stone curtain walls form an irregular polygonal plan with regular crenellated parapets; lighter squared corner quoins or repairs punctuate the masonry. A tall, rectangular stone keep rises well above the curtain with a projecting machicolated platform and crenellated merlons along its roofline. Several lower square and rounded towers break the curtain; an arched stone gateway gives access to an inner bailey that opens onto a paved town plaza.

The Castle of Beja is the principal nucleus of the fortifications that encompassed the medieval city, planted at its north-west corner on a hilltop it shares with the Sé Cathedral and the Chapel of Santo Amaro. Its irregular pentagonal circuit, partly ringed by a barbican, carries two lines of walls lined with merlons over embrasures, internal walkways and battlemented towers.

The keep in the north-east corner projects beyond the walls and rises some 40 metres over roughly three storeys, finished with prismatic merlons, machicolations and a terrace, its face towards the parade ground carrying a Roman portico. Against the north and east walls stands the two-storey Casa do Governador; a programme begun in February 2008 set out to convert the former Governor's Residence into a military museum, tourist centre and cafeteria.
