The Castle of Elvas crowns an elevated site known as the Costa da Vila Fria, part of a first line of defence of the Portuguese Alentejo alongside the military forts of Ouguela, Campo Maior, Olivença and Juromenha. Its plan is an irregular quadrilateral of curtain walls flanked by towers on the south, west and north, with the Porta da Vila in the south-west surmounted by a capstone bearing the coat of arms of King John II of Portugal.

A rectangular keep flanks the western angle, entered through a Roman-arched gate into a vaulted principal hall with four arrowslits. At the southern angle a nine-sided rooftop artillery emplacement offered two levels of gunfire through twelve arrowslits, the medieval battlements adapted for artillery. A two-storey alcalde's residence stands against the north-east wall, with a cistern to the south.

On 14 January 1659 the Battle of the Lines of Elvas pitted Haro's forces against the cobbled-together army of António Luís de Meneses, 1st Marquis of Marialva and 3rd Count of Cantanhede. The restored fortress still forms part of the town's defensive ring above Elvas.
