Castle of Alvor
The Castle of Alvor is a medieval fortification on a small hilltop in Alvor, Algarve, Portugal. Only low stretches of its rectangular curtain wall, a northern gate with its defending tower and an eastern tower remnant survive today as archaeological vestiges after the 1755 earthquake.

Sited on a roughly 5-metre hill, the castle forms a compact rectangular redoubt of irregular stone blocks laid without regular ashlar, its curtain walls encircling a central garrison square. At its prime a defended north-facing entrance with a flanking tower controlled access, and an eastern wall retained a tower looking toward the sea. A paved path follows the base of the enclosure and a stairway ascends the southern wall; the walls rise as a continuous low-heeled silhouette above the town.

The Moors took Alvor in 716, and the settlement kept the political and commercial importance it had acquired under earlier cultures — an ancient river community with access both to the sea and, across the ravines and rivers of the region, to the interior. The castle rose on a five-metre hilltop in the town, a military monument associated with the nearby Castle of Silves.
What survives today are vestiges: low stretches of the rectangular curtain wall in irregular blocks, a staircase along the southern wall, the main gate to the north — built in the Renaissance and defended by a tower — and on the eastern wall the remnant of another tower with a panoramic view of the sea. The fortification was reduced to this state by the earthquake of 1755.
