Krásna Hôrka Castle
Krásna Hôrka Castle is a hilltop medieval castle above the village of Krásnohorské Podhradie in eastern Slovakia. Built from the 13th century and enlarged over time, it served as a fortified residence and later a museum; it suffered major roof and upper-level fire damage in 2012. The site was a National Cultural Monument and was open to the public as a restored museum before the fire.

Perched on a limestone hilltop and surrounded by forest, the castle forms an elongated, multi-enclosure silhouette of pale plastered curtain walls and interconnected rectangular palace blocks. Several round towers punctuate the outer walls, each capped with low, dark conical or domed roofs; slate or lead-covered pitched roofs top the inner residential ranges. A lower outer enceinte runs along the downhill side with a gravel approach path and gate; at its prime the roofs, bell tower and interior exhibition rooms were intact.

The Hungarian Ákos brothers built the castle in the 13th century on the trade route leading from Transylvania through Košice to Spiš and today's Poland; the first recorded mention dates from 1333. The Ákos family — which later changed its name to Bebek — lived at Krásna Hôrka from the mid-13th century to 1566, apart from a short period when the Máriássy family seized control of the castle.
In 1578 the castle passed into the hands of Péter Andrássy, and it remained with the Andrássy family until 1918, the year the First Czechoslovak Republic was founded. Designated a National Cultural Monument in 1961 and said to be one of Slovakia's best-preserved castles, it was renovated during 2010–2011 and reopened in April 2011 — only to be extensively damaged on 10 March 2012 by a fire started when teenagers carelessly discarded a cigarette and set the grass alight.
