Ptuj Castle
Ptuj Castle is a hilltop castle overlooking the town of Ptuj and the Drava River in northeastern Slovenia. Built in the mid-12th century and rebuilt in the Baroque period, it became a noble residence and today houses a regional museum.

Sited on a grassy hill above the Drava River, the castle is dominated by a broad white rectangular main residential block with a steep red-tiled roof set behind low stone curtain walls. Several towers punctuate the wall line, including at least one cylindrical tower with a conical red roof and a taller square tower with a steep roof. A run of lower outbuildings with orange-red roofs steps down the slope toward the town; the whole ensemble is reflected in the river below.

Ptuj Castle stands on a hill alongside the Drava River, overlooking the town of Ptuj in northeastern Slovenia. Built in the mid-12th century and rebuilt in the Baroque period, it was for a time owned by the Jesuits of Zagreb, who in 1656, pressed by financial hardship, sold it to the Holy Roman Field Marshal Walter Leslie — a Scot by birth, who turned it into a rural residence and the seat of a landed estate.
Leslie's descendants owned the castle until 1802, when the estate passed to their relatives, the House of Dietrichstein. That line too became extinct, in 1864, and in 1873 the castle was bought by Countess Theresia von Herberstein, eldest daughter of Joseph Franz, Prince of Dietrichstein.
The Herberstein family kept Ptuj until 1945, when the castle was nationalised. It now houses a regional museum and remains a prominent landmark above the town.
