Castle of Xàtiva

Xàtiva Castle is a twin fortification on a rocky hill above the city of Xàtiva in Valencia, Spain, made up of an older lower fort (Castillo Menor) and a larger medieval upper fort (Castillo Mayor). The complex runs along a narrow crest with long stepped curtain walls, towers and terraces and retains extensive surviving masonry. It was an active fortress through the early modern period before losing strategic importance after an 18th-century earthquake.

The shape it held in its prime.

A long stone fortress runs along a narrow rocky ridge, divided into a lower (menor) and upper (mayor) enclosure; continuous pale-beige limestone curtain walls with crenellations and angled stretches step up the slope. The summit holds a compact group of square and rectangular towers and keeps, with ramped walkways and an arched gate along the middle wall. Terraced gardens and a paved fountain terrace sit within the lower enclosure, and the castle overlooks a broad agricultural plain and distant low mountains.
