Kronoberg Castle Ruin
Kronoberg Castle is a medieval castle ruin on an island in Helgasjön, 5 km north of Växjö in Kronoberg County, Sweden. Built in the 15th century and repeatedly fortified and rebuilt, it lost strategic importance after the 17th century and later fell into ruin.

A compact island fortress of roughly rectangular plan with continuous stone curtain walls built of irregular local fieldstone, punctured by small rectangular gun- and arrow-holes; two prominent rounded towers anchor the corners and a central gate pierces the long wall facing the mainland. The island is low and grassy, ringed by lake water, and reached by a narrow timber causeway; at its prime the stone walls rose to a continuous parapet walk with defensive embrasures and gun positions.

Kronoberg Castle stands in ruin on an island in Helgasjön, five kilometres north of Växjö, in the Swedish county that takes its name from the castle. Built in the 15th century close to what was then the border between Sweden and Denmark, it was repeatedly fortified and rebuilt, becoming a stronghold in this part of Småland.
Duke Charles continued work on the fortifications, but at the end of January 1612 the castle was taken and burned by Danish troops under Breide Rantzau, and reconstruction did not begin until 1616. The castle lost its strategic importance after the 17th century and fell into ruin; long open to summer visitors, the site has been closed since January 2023 for lack of maintenance.
