What Linköping Castle looked like in its prime.

A compact limestone castle set facing the cathedral across the town; its massing is dominated by a continuous ring wall with a long three-storey southern wing added along that wall and a lower, single-storey western nave. Externally the castle presents white-rendered masonry with red-painted surrounds to doors and some windows (as recorded after the 1570s alterations). The north wing completes the courtyard block and the whole appears as a complete, lived-in Renaissance residence.
