Two small islands in a slow-moving river pool are enclosed by rough grey stone curtain walls and a continuous water moat. A large white-plastered residential range with steep red-tiled gabled roofs rises behind the walls, punctuated by small rectangular windows. Projecting from the curtain wall is a cylindrical stone round tower with a conical tiled roof and tall finial; shorter turrets and crenellated wallheads connect the islands. Surrounding trees and the lake's flat water complete the setting.

Hallwyl Castle is one of the most important moated castles in Switzerland, set on two islands in the River Aabach just north of Lake Hallwil at Seengen in Aargau. It was the home castle of the Lords of Hallwyl, an originally free noble family first mentioned in a testament of 1167, who owned the surrounding land and parts of the lake as their personal property.

In 1925 the family foundation made an effort to preserve the castle, and it was opened to the public that same year. Since 1994 it has belonged to the canton of Aargau as part of the Museum Aargau, its white-plastered residential block and older stone curtain walls and towers still ringed by a continuous water moat.
