Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle
Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle is a large medieval fortress complex on a limestone peninsula carved by the Smotrych River in western Ukraine. Built and rebuilt from the medieval period through the early modern era, the complex comprises an Old Castle and a later New Castle with a ring of towers and thick curtain walls. It is a well-preserved regional landmark and part of a national historic reserve and a tentative UNESCO site.

A compact cluster of pale limestone curtain walls and stout towers sits atop a steep limestone peninsula above a deep river canyon. Towers are mainly cylindrical with steep conical roofs; several towers show red-brick upper drums while lower walls are light local stone. The fortress is connected to the mainland by a single stone bridge leading to a dominant gatehouse; terraces, bastions and a continuous wall-walk encircle the inner bailey and descend toward the canyon.

First securely documented in the mid-14th century, when western Rus' lay under the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the fortress guarding the bridge into Kamianets was already important enough in 1374 for Prince Yuriy Koriatovych to record the town's Magdeburg rights being presented inside the castle. Excavations in the 1960s suggest it may reach back to the late 12th or early 13th century, with an earlier earthen fortress of the Kievan Rus' era nearby.
Its position on a strategic crossroads in Podilia drew successive rebuilders: Casimir IV fortified the Old Town, Sigismund I and Stephen Báthory rebuilt the Old Castle, and Sigismund III and Władysław IV founded the New Castle to counter long-range artillery. Twelve towers ringed the complex, among them the Tenchynska and Lanckorońska towers commemorating the Tęczyński and Lanckoroński families, and the Pope's Tower with its arsenal, powder warehouse and treasury.
Despite the many changes, the limestone complex above the Smotrych canyon keeps a coherent architectural design and is one of the few medieval constructions in modern Ukraine that is relatively well preserved. It anchors the National Historical-Architectural Reserve 'Kamianets', was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, and counts among the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.
