Khotyn Fortress
Khotyn Fortress is a large medieval stone fortification on the right bank of the Dniester River at Khotyn, in present-day Ukraine. The complex preserves a high, crenellated curtain wall with multiple conical-roofed towers, an inner raised courtyard and a prominent gatehouse and approach. It is today a state historical and architectural reserve and a landmark of the region.

The shape it held in its prime.
A massive irregular polygonal stone fortress perched on a high river cliff, its yellow-beige masonry curtain walls topped by regular crenellations. Several cylindrical and rectangular towers rise above the wall, most capped by steep conical wooden shingle roofs. A central gatehouse with a wooden approach bridge penetrates the curtain; inside the walls an elevated multi-level courtyard is visible. The fortress stands directly above the broad Dniester, with steep slopes dropping to the riverbank.
