Zhovkva Castle
Zhovkva Castle is a fortified residence occupying the principal square of the town of Zhovkva in western Ukraine, founded by Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski. Built from 1594 and mostly completed by 1606, the complex comprised residential wings, a central gate-tower and associated chapel, garden and defensive moats.

A long, rectangular two-storey block of pale plastered masonry with a continuous line of small rectangular windows and steep red clay tile roofs flanked by matching wings. The composition is dominated by a taller central gate-tower with a steep triangular gable pierced by small circular openings and topped by small pinnacles; its ground floor contains a large arched Serlian entrance. The castle stands directly on the town's principal square and was originally encircled by wide defensive moats.

Zhovkva Castle occupies the principal square of the town of Zhovkva in western Ukraine, founded by the Polish Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski as his fortified residence. Construction began in 1594 and was mostly complete by 1606, producing a complex with a Serlian entrance arch, moats up to 17 metres wide, a wing for the arsenal and stables, a garden with a menagerie of wisents, deer and chamois, and a palatine chapel consecrated in 1640.
The castle's golden age came in the late seventeenth century, when it passed by inheritance to Jakub Sobieski and then to his son King Jan III Sobieski — a native of Zhovkva, who celebrated his victory at Vienna here. In the eighteenth century the facade was decorated with statues of its owners from the Żółkiewski, Daniłowicz, Sobieski and Radziwill families.
After the partition of Poland the castle fell into disuse and was auctioned off; during the nineteenth century the chapel and other structures were dismantled or rebuilt to accommodate a local school. The castle was damaged again in the First World War, and though some restoration was undertaken just before the Second World War, much more was required after it.
