The shape it held in its prime.
Massive rectangular Great Tower of mixed red-brown and grey rubble sandstone with lighter ashlar quoins dominates the silhouette, rising above low lengths of curtain wall around a compact bailey set on a town hill above the River Monnow. The tower's upper stage has large, decorated windows and once carried a pitched roof; narrow slit windows punctuate lower walls. At ground level an arched doorway and low outer retaining walls open onto a grassy market area (Agincourt Square).
