George Graham(1944–)

George Graham

The Lanarkshire footballer who won the league at Arsenal both as an elegant player and as the manager of one of the great English defences, including the most dramatic title finish ever seen.

George Graham was born on 30 November 1944 in Bargeddie, Lanarkshire. As a player he was a tall, unhurried, stylish forward whose ease on the ball earned him the nickname Stroller. He won the League Cup with Chelsea, and then with Arsenal was a key member of the 1970 to 1971 side that won the Double of First Division title and FA Cup, the club's first league championship in nearly forty years. He also played for Manchester United and won caps for Scotland.

It was as a manager that he became one of the defining figures of the English game. He took Millwall into the top flight for the first time in the club's history, then in 1986 returned to Arsenal and rebuilt the club around defensive organisation of a quality the English game had rarely seen, the back line of Seaman, Dixon, Bould, Adams, Keown and Winterburn becoming a byword for discipline.

He won the League Cup in 1987, then in the 1988 to 1989 season took Arsenal to the First Division title in the most dramatic finish in the history of English league football: needing to win at Anfield by two clear goals on the final night, Arsenal scored with virtually the last kick through Michael Thomas to take the championship from Liverpool on goals scored. He won the title again in 1991, his side losing only a single league match all season.

In 1993 his Arsenal became the first club to win both domestic cups, the FA Cup and the League Cup, in the same season, and in 1994 they won the European Cup Winners' Cup, beating Parma in Copenhagen with the defensive mastery that was his signature. He later managed Leeds United into Europe with a rebuilt young side, and won the League Cup with Tottenham Hotspur in 1999. George Graham's name belongs among the title-winning managers of the English game, and among the finest builders of a defence it has produced.
