John Sweeney(1958–)

John Sweeney, investigative journalist

The Tonbridge Catholic-school journalist who joined The Observer in 1986, became BBC Panorama's lead investigative reporter, exposed Scientology and Russian state-sponsored assassination across two decades, and has covered the war in Ukraine from Kyiv and Lviv since 2022.

John Sweeney was born at Tonbridge in west Kent on 30 July 1958, eldest of five children of an Irish-immigrant railway clerk and an English bookkeeper. He was schooled at the Skinners' School in Tunbridge Wells and read Modern History at St Hugh's College, Oxford, taking a first in 1979.

He joined Reuters at twenty-three in 1981 and worked the Northern Ireland Troubles, the Falklands War and the Miners' Strike as a daily correspondent, the news-correspondent apprenticeship the rest of his career was built on.

He moved to The Observer in 1986 and worked there for thirteen years as chief correspondent and investigations reporter, covering the Romanian Revolution of 1989 and the siege of Sarajevo through the Yugoslav Wars. He published Trading with the Enemy on the Sarajevo investigation and Big Daddy on the Mugabe regime.

He moved to BBC Panorama in 2001 and was its lead investigative reporter for twenty-one years. His investigations included the 2007 Scientology and Me, the 2006 Sex Crimes and the Vatican on the Catholic child-abuse cover-up, the Jimmy Savile investigation, the ISIS wartime assignments in Mosul and Raqqa, and the Trump Russian-money investigation, alongside the Hunting Ghislaine podcast of 2021 to 2022.

He left the BBC in 2022 and moved to Kyiv six weeks after the February 2022 Russian invasion, running the Investigates Russia podcast from Kyiv and Lviv across more than two hundred episodes on the war and the Putin regime, where he continues to be based. The Sweeney name, the Scoto-Gaelic galloglass patronymic Mac Suibhne of the Donegal-and-Antrim Hebridean settlement, he carried from a Tonbridge Catholic family into senior British investigative broadcast journalism and the Ukrainian-war correspondent's beat.
