The Tonbridge Catholic-school journalism boy who joined *The Observer* in 1986, became BBC *Panorama*'s lead investigative reporter from 2001, exposed Scientology and Russian state-sponsored assassinations across two decades of senior-platform broadcast journalism, ran the *Hunting Ghislaine* small Maxwell-trafficking podcast investigation across 2021-22, and lives in Lviv and Kyiv covering Ukraine since the February 2022 Russian invasion.

John Sweeney was born at the Pembury Hospital outside Tonbridge in west Kent on 30 July 1958, eldest of five children of Leonard Sweeney, an Irish-immigrant small Tonbridge British-Railway clerk of substantial Catholic-immigrant working-class background, and Brenda Sweeney, an English-Anglican Tonbridge-bookkeeper. The household was small lower-middle-class Catholic-Anglican Tonbridge of the post-war Catholic-immigrant-and-English-Anglican mixed-marriage settlement: small terraced house in Tonbridge's small Catholic-parish area, the father at the London-and-South-Eastern Railway Tonbridge-station booking-office, the mother running the Tonbridge-domestic-and-family small household-bookkeeping work alongside the five-children-management. He was schooled at the Tunbridge Wells Skinners' School from eleven to eighteen on the Catholic-Anglican-mixed-school open-scholarship offer of the Skinners' Company endowment, took the A-Levels in 1976 with three small As in English, History and French, and was admitted on the open undergraduate scholarship to St Hugh's College Oxford in October 1976 at eighteen.

He took the Modern History BA at St Hugh's in 1979 at twenty-one with First-Class Honours, took the Oxford-postgraduate-period in the small library-and-archival-research small Newspaper-Library-British-Library training across 1979 to 1981, and at twenty-three in 1981 took the Reuters small junior-trainee-correspondent post at the Reuters Fleet-Street office.
