The longest-serving Prime Minister in the history of the Commonwealth, who led Canada through the Second World War and built its welfare state.
William Lyon Mackenzie King was born at Berlin, Ontario, now Kitchener, on 17 December 1874, a grandson of the reformer William Lyon Mackenzie. He took degrees at Toronto, Chicago and Harvard, becoming one of the foremost authorities of his day on industrial relations, and entered federal politics as Canada's first Minister of Labour.
He became leader of the Liberal Party in 1919 and Prime Minister of Canada in 1921. Across three separate terms he held the office for almost twenty-two years, longer than any other prime minister in the history of the British Commonwealth, governing with a steady instinct for the unity of a country divided by language and region.
He led Canada through the whole of the Second World War, from 1939 to 1945, mobilising the country's industry and armed forces while holding the federation together through the strains of the war effort. He guided the nation from a dominion within the Empire toward full and recognised sovereignty in foreign affairs.
His governments laid the foundations of the Canadian welfare state, introducing the federal old-age pension, unemployment insurance and the family allowance. He was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1947, a rare distinction for any politician of the Commonwealth.
The King name is an old English nickname surname, from cyning, given to one who carried himself with a regal bearing or played the king in the festival pageant. Mackenzie King carried it through the longest premiership the Commonwealth has known.
