Descriptive — Middle High German lanc, long or tall — for the tall man. The north inflects it Lange, the south keeps the bare Lang. Cognate of English Long.
The history of Lange
There is no older or simpler way to tell two men apart than by their height, and Lange — the tall one — is the German twin of the English nickname-surname Long, each language reaching for the same plain word. The -e ending marks the north, the bare Lang the south.
It travelled worldwide with German emigration, and is borne today across German and Scandinavian sport, science and the arts — a name as unremarkable and as enduring as the trait it once described.
