The miller — from mlyn, the mill (with the agent ending -yk). The single most common surname in Ukraine, and the Slavic cousin of Miller and Müller.
The history of Melnyk
On the black-earth steppe that fed half of Europe, no trade was more central than the miller's — so the man of the mlyn, the mill, became the eastern member of the great miller family that runs through the German Müller, the Dutch Mulder and the English Miller.
The same name across Europe
Melnyk shares its meaning — not its bloodline — with these names from other corners of Europe: cognates, the same word for the same thing, formed independently in each language. Cousins by meaning, with separate ancestral stories a search box flattens into near-twins.
