'Son of Rodrigo' — the Spanish form of the Gothic Hroderic, 'famous power'. Rodrigo was the name of the last Visigothic king of Spain, and after him of countless Castilian nobles.
The history of Rodríguez
Every Rodríguez is, by the bald grammar of the name, a son of Rodrigo — and Rodrigo is heavy with the founding myth of Spain itself. It was the last Visigothic king, Roderic, whose defeat at the Guadalete in 711 let the Moors over the strait and began the eight-century Reconquista. The name never lost its prestige; it ran through the Castilian nobility and the heroes of the frontier for the next thousand years, then out with the conquest to become one of the bedrock names of Latin America.
