Ellan Vannin, a self-governing Crown Dependency in the middle of the Irish Sea, never part of the United Kingdom. Its Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Mann and the Isles, and the Manx language, gave it a surname stock found nowhere else: the contracted Mac- names that begin with C, K and Q, Quayle, Quirk, Quine, Kneale, Corlett, Costain.
