Chatham Dockyard

Chatham Dockyard was a Royal Navy dockyard on the River Medway in Kent that developed from the mid-16th century into a large naval-industrial complex. Over centuries it grew to include multiple dry docks, covered slipways, mast ponds, storehouses, smitheries and workshops and remained a working yard until closure in 1984; much of the Georgian yard survives as a historic site.

What Chatham Dockyard looked like in its prime.

A long riverside industrial complex stretching roughly a mile along the Medway, composed of red‑brick storehouses and workshops, tall pitched-roof covered slipways, brick perimeter walls and gatehouses, rows of dry docks and quays, timber yards and rectangular mast ponds; dark-hulled steam and steel warships and sailing masts fill the water, while tall chimneys and cranes punctuate the skyline, and wooden staging and scaffolding hug vessel hulls under construction.
