Suomenlinna (Sveaborg/Viapori) is an 18th‑century sea fortress spread across a group of linked rocky islands off Helsinki, built as a bastion-style coastal defence with extensive masonry walls, earthen ramparts and a dockyard. The complex contains barracks, magazines, tunnels and parade courtyards and remained an active naval base through the 19th century before becoming a civilian neighbourhood and UNESCO site.

A domed Orthodox church tower rises above the highest island; courtyards are paved with cobbles and lined by uniform two‑storey military houses.
