Hadrian's Villa

Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana) is a vast Roman imperial villa and palace complex built around AD 120–130 near Tivoli, comprising dozens of monumental buildings, terraces, gardens, pools and nymphaea. The site contains a wide variety of architectural types — peristyles, exedras, domes, porticos and artificial waterways — arranged across artificial esplanades and connected by galleries and stairways.

The shape it held in its prime.

A sprawling complex of red brick, travertine and tufa, punctuated by white marble pavements, colonnades and domed exedras; broad reflecting basins and narrow channels cross terraces at different levels. Long retaining walls and vaulted cryptoporticoes run under open peristyles and formal gardens planted with cypresses. Circular theatres and porticos with Ionic or Corinthian columns enclose ring-pools and central islands; sculpted statuary punctuates pool edges and niche-lined walls under bright sky.
