Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle is an 18th-century country house in Argyll, western Scotland, built in an early Gothic Revival style on the shore of Loch Fyne. It has been the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Argyll (Clan Campbell) since the 18th century and remains a lived-in house open to visitors.

The shape it held in its prime.

A long, symmetrical grey-ashlar castellated mansion with four prominent round corner towers capped by steep conical slate roofs and crenellated parapets. The three-storey main ranges show pitched roofs with dormer windows above rows of tall, arched sash windows. A central pointed-arch entrance projects onto a manicured lawn and formal garden beds; the building sits against distant wooded hills beside the loch. Stonework is uniform, pale grey-green in tone, with slate roofs and formal terraces.
