Prezë Fortress
Prezë Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress in Prezë, Albania. Originally founded in the 6th century and substantially enlarged in the 14th–15th centuries, the castle has a rectangular plan with four corner towers and overlooks the surrounding plain. The site contains a mosque built in the 1500s and a later clock tower and is registered as a cultural monument.

Hilltop rectangular castle of mixed brown-grey rubble and mortar with a continuous curtain wall topped by squared crenellations; the circuit is punctuated by four simple square corner towers rising a storey or two above the wall. Walls show rough coursed fieldstone with visible mortar and small slit openings. The interior is an open grassy bailey; the main entrance is a single stone arch set into one curtain. The castle sits on a grassy rise overlooking a broad plain.

Prezë Castle was built by the Byzantine emperor Justinian the Great in the 550s, on a hilltop overlooking the village that shares its name and the Tirana plain beyond. Enlargement begun in the 14th century and completed in the early 15th gave it the rectangular plan and four corner towers it keeps today, under the Thopias, a local Albanian feudal family.
Between 1443 and 1468 the castle was one of the core strongholds of the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire led by Skanderbeg. The mosque inside the walls, built in the 1500s, is one of the oldest in Albania; a clock tower was added around 1800–50, and the castle is now protected as a monument of culture.
