The shape it held in its prime.
Perched on a rocky promontory above a wide Alpine valley, the castle presents an irregular multi-layered enceinte of grey limestone curtain walls stepping down the slope. A compact inner ward of tall ruined walls and pierced battlements occupies the highest point, with scaffolding currently on one of the taller ruined ranges. A conspicuous round tower with a conical roof stands on the outer eastward wall; grassy terraces, paths and low towers punctuate the outer bailey, and dense forest falls away from the cliff edges.
