Pazin Castle
Pazin Castle is a medieval fortified structure built on a solid rock outcrop in the middle of the town of Pazin, overlooking the deep karst gorge of the Pazinčica Foiba. It is the largest and best-preserved castle in Istria County and today houses local museums.

Compact medieval fortress of hewn stone set directly atop a bare rocky outcrop in the town centre, its masonry walls rising sheer from the rock. The castle reads as a clustered mass of stone buildings with a defined roofline and enclosing curtain walls; narrow defensive openings puncture the faces. It dominantly overlooks the deep karst gorge and sinkhole of the Pazinčica Foiba, the cliff dropping away beneath the outer walls. The structure appears complete and occupied in 1580.

Pazin Castle is built on solid rock in the middle of the town, overlooking the gorge where the karst river Pazinčica disappears underground through a sinkhole. In the 12th century the bishops of Poreč ceded it to Meinhard of Schwarzenburg, and it passed to the Counts of Gorizia.
When Albert IV, Margrave of Gorizia, died without successors in 1374, the castle was inherited by the House of Habsburg. For centuries it was the administrative seat of the County of Pazin, governed by a castellan or the count himself, and its present form dates from the 16th century.
In 1766 the castle was sold to Antonio Laderchi de Montecuccoli for 240 florins and remained his family's property until 1945. The largest and best-preserved castle in Istria County, it now houses the Ethnographic Museum of Istria and the Pazin Town Museum.
