Manchester Castle
Manchester Castle was a medieval fortified manor house in what is now central Manchester, first recorded in 1184 and last mentioned in 1215. It stood on a bluff at the confluence of the rivers Irk and Irwell, close to the medieval township and near the site of the modern Chetham's School of Music.

The shape it held in its prime.
A compact ringwork fortress of timber and earth: three concentric ditches and corresponding earthen banks surround an inner enclosure set on a bluff above the meeting of two rivers. The defences are formed of timber palisade atop the ramparts; inside stand a timber manor house and ancillary wooden buildings with steep thatch or timber roofs. The silhouette is low and irregular, dominated by rounded earthworks and the linear edge of the bluff overlooking the rivers and township below.
