A large, asymmetrical Victorian Gothic mass of warm Pennine sandstone with a soaring 280 ft clock tower and steep slate roofs punctuated by tall chimneys, turrets and arched gables. Repeated tall pointed-arch windows and clustered columns animate long façades facing Albert Square; carved statues mark doorways and corners. Interiors are roomy and well-lit by high arched windows and glazed skylights, with stone vaulting, mosaic floors and a timber-panelled wagon roof in the principal hall.
